ISIS Affiliated Hackers Deface Public Websites in New York, Ohio, and Elsewhere

The most recent wave of international cyber attacks has now affected government websites both in and outside of the United States, triggering a new FBI investigation.

According to this Fox19 story, affected sites were mainly in but not limited to Ohio and New York state, with some attacks reaching as far as the Dominican Republic and Egypt.

It is not clear how much of a genuine affiliation exists between the group “Team System Dz” (who claim responsibility for the attacks on their Facebook page) and the ISIS, but the defaced sights appear to have a politically motivated anti-Trump message that ends in “I love the Islamic State”.

Backbar, a ritzy cocktail establishment in Somerville, Massachusetts responded with this comment on Facebook, “Our website is now fully down… but the bar is fully open!” continuing, “It’s Saturday night! Come have a cocktail, don’t let ISIS win!”

Since, in many cases, direct financial losses are viewed as minimal, officials can have difficulty grasping the seriousness of website defacement tactics. The real damage should be measured in loss of public trust and in terms of the hack’s ability to further hinder already sluggish performance of public services.
